Martin Luther King, Jr. in Waycross, Georgia
The purpose of this book is to document a speech of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Waycross, Georgia on March 23, 1968. It also documents the Waycross Movement led by Charles Edward Wells, Sr. from 1967 to 1974. Towards this end, this book is a compilation composed of the transcript of his March 23, 1968 speech “The Washington Campaign” delivered at Greater Mt. Zion AME Church in Waycross, Georgia; related articles from the Waycross Journal-Herald; transcripts of his Washington Campaign speeches in Albany, Georgia and Augusta, Georgia; documents; photographs; and two of my essays. On the one hand, Martin Luther King, Jr. was also known as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On the other hand, Charles Edward Wells, Sr. was also known as Rev. Dr. C. E. Wells, Sr. Both men were active in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in leadership positions. Whereas King was the SCLC president, Wells was the SCLC field secretary for the state of Georgia.—J. Vern Cromartie
