Before the Split and From the Masthead
This book contains essential documents related to the Central Committee and Editorial Staff of the Black Panther Party as reported in its official newspaper, The Black Panther, from 1967 to 1970. It also contains an essay by the editor. This book is divided into three parts. Part one contains lists of the Black Panther Party’s Central Committee members that appeared in The Black Panther between October 5, 1968 and June 6, 1970. In addition, it contains lists of the Editorial Staff members that appeared in The Black Panther between November 23, 1967 and June 6, 1970. Part two includes five documents. One document is a list of chapters and branches that appeared in the December 27, 1969 issue of The Black Panther. A second document is a list of recognized chapters, branches, and NCCF (National Committees to Combat Fascism) that appeared in the June 27, 1970 issue of The Black Panther. A third document is a list of chapters and branches with breakfast programs that appeared in the April 27, 1969 issue of The Black Panther. A fourth document is a list of chapters and branches with breakfast programs that appeared in the November 15, 1969 issue of The Black Panther. A fifth document is a book list that appeared in the September 14, 1968 issue of The Black Panther. Members of the Black Panther Party were strongly encouraged, and in some cases required, to read the books on the list as part of its political education program. Part three consists of an article titled “Controlled From the West: Remembering the Central Committee of the Black Panther Party.” It is a slightly revised version of an article that I first published in the Hawaii International Conference on Education 2021 Proceedings (Cromartie, 2020a). The version in this book has also been published in the Jeremiah B. Sanderson Leadership Institute Occasional Papers Serie (Cromartie, 2020b).—J. Vern Cromartie
